I finally delivered a commission I have been working on for a couple months. This is a five paneled still life done to represent a couples 30 years together. I got the idea to do it as a series, basically showing when they meet, their early marriage, their daughters, the present, and the future. I used various things from their home, and some photos to push the story. There are all kinds of hidden and subtle elements that you can look for. For example the pearls, the traditional gift for the 30th are arranged in an S, their last initial.
I wanted it to look like a chain of events so I built a frame out of oak that is hinged together in a chain. I stained the oak dark and gold leafed the inset. Each image is 8x10, with the frame it is over 5 feet long. The nice thing is that it can be hung on the wall or be placed as a free standing unit. I will post closeups soon.

PLEIN-AIR LANDSCAPE PAINTING
Plein-Air is a French expression which means “in the open air.” Experience the pleasure of painting, of self-expression, and of seeing the world in a new way as you meet at various locations and scenic parks around Cincinnati to learn to sketch and to paint with oils. Drawing on the ideas of impressionism, you will practice the techniques needed to complete painted sketches, including basic composition, value, pattern, color spotting, and covering the canvas. Then, building on those skills, you will complete a larger fully realized landscape painting that will capture the impression of light and color of the Cincinnati landscape. In case of rain, we will arrange to meet indoors or in parks with overhead cover. Details and directions to the various locations will be given in class. No experience necessary. Richard Luschek studied classical painting under Boston painter Paul Ingbretson for three years after earning his BFA degree with UC’s DAAP program. In addition to working as an artist and maintaining his own art studio, he has taught with the Art Academy of Cincinnati and he also teaches classes privately in his studio.

On the Radio MP3

I had posted earlier on this blog about a radio interview I did for a local public radio show on WVXU. I ended up missing it the night it played, but found it on their website. I will post a link to the show here. It is the second spot, so you can fast forward through the discussion of the local Harry Potter parties to hear me. I sound fairly intelligent, but I don't like my voice.

Stinky Wagon

Here is a painting I did at my friend Jeff Gandert's house. Jeff is a wonderful wildlife painter that lives near Milford. He has some wonderful property that he lives on with his dogs and a bunch of chickens. Carl Samson and I drove out there to do some landscape painting. First thing, Jeff made us some omelets with fresh eggs. In his living room he had a cage with about 28 small chicks that he just got in the mail- did you know they mail live chicks in a box? We had a low key day, but I did do one painting that I kind of liked. I enjoyed the view of his yard from just inside the tree line of the woods behind his house, but it needed something. So I pushed an old wheel barrow with a flat tire from his house to the middle of my picture. Unfortunately I realized that this is the wagon holds that stuff that gets cleaned out of the dog cages. Also, unfortunate was the direction of the breeze. I had a great time painting this picture, despite the occasional whiff of dog doody.

On The Easel

Well, this painting has been on the easel for a very long time. Almost a year. I have not touched it some time as I have been on other things. As soon as I tidy up and finish a commission and a few other small things, I will get on this one and knock it out.
I posted this mostly to shame myself into finishing it, plus it had been too long since my last post. Just so you know, this has been up for so long that the red and blue of the Japanese doll has faded to a different hue and value to that on the painting when I laid it in a year ago.

Solo Show at UC Clermont College

Everyone mark your calendars, I have just been chosen for a solo show in August. Not this August, but August of 2008. You have plenty of time to plan for this show.
So I hope to have a pile of new paintings for this one. I am not sure what they will be, but I am thinking they will be larger and more figurative. I will remind you again of the show in 12 or 13 months. I will offer more details later of the when, where and how.

Reserve Your Seat for the 2007 Best of the Bottoms Art Show and Auction

This is a painting I did for last years show and auction.

I submitted some paintings that I did in the Valley View Preserve in Milford, Ohio. This is a wonderful piece of land that a group in the Milford area have been spending a lot of time saving from development. Every time I go there I have a major wildlife moment with deer running by and all number of birds flying past. One of my paintings won an honorable mention again this year and two of the works will be in the live auction. The event is a fund raiser for the Valley View Foundation. It is a great way to help out a fine organization and possibly get some paintings for good prices.

The second annual Best of The Bottoms Art Competition and Sale event will be held on June 15, 2007 (6-9pm) at the Krippendorf Lodge located at the Cincinnati Nature Center. Our guests will have drinks and Hors d’Oeuvres while enjoying the on-going silent auction and live auction beginning at 7:30pm.
The show and auction is open to the public. Tickets are $50 per person and all proceeds benefit the Valley View Foundation. The evening will feature artwork created on the Valley View property, music, drinks and light appetizers. Many of the artists who participate in the show will also be in attendance.
